Amritsar

Amritsar is a holy city in the state of Punjab, India. Amritsar is perhaps the most important pilgrimage and tourist destination in Punjab. The city is known for its Golden Temple, which attracts tourists and devotees in droves from across the country and abroad. The Golden Temple occupies an important place in the pilgrimage sites of the Sikhs in India.

The history of the Golden temple dates back to some four centuries ago, when Guru Ram Das on the orders of his predecessor Guru Amar Das decided to built a congregational place for the Sikhs. The temple was completed by Guru Arjan Dev in the 16th century.

The Golden Temple is designed beautifully and is a marvel in architecture. The temple has four gates that symbolise the openness and liberal character of the Sikhism. The temple seems to welcome people from all the sides. The temple is surrounded by the lake. The Golden Temple is built in three stories, the first one is done in marble while the other two have gold plating. The dome of the temple basks in the golden glory, as the dome is gold plated. The walls of the temple are decorated with carved wooden panels and elaborate inlay work in gold and silver is another highlight of the temple architecture.
