Tórshavn is the capital and largest town of the Faroe Islands. It is located in the southern part on the east coast of Streymoy. To the north west of the town lies the 347-metre high mountain Húsareyn, and to the southwest, the 350-metre high Kirkjubøreyn. The city itself has a population of 19,000. The city was founded in the 10th century and may well be the oldest capital in Northern Europe.
The old part, Tinganes, is very spectacular and contains public buildings, such as the Prime Minister's office close to some very old turf roofed houses that are still inhabited. Torshavn is a major port and the only place in the islands connected to other countries by ferry.
