Udong was a royal capital of Cambodia from 1618 to 1866, located on top of Phnom Udong, about 40 km northwest of Phnom Penh. In 1866, it was abandoned by King Norodom, taking his royal court along with him to the current capital, Phnom Penh.
It was extensively bombed by the American forces during the Vietnam War and damaged by the Khmer Rouge in 1977.
