Nimbin is a small village in the Northern Rivers area of the Australian state of New South Wales, approximately 30 km north of Lismore, 33 km southeast of Kyogle, and 70 km west of Byron Bay.
Nimbin is an alternative lifestyle town, originally populated by people dropping out, and interested in communal living in the 1970s. The town is very much open for tourism, and has some shops and cafes that play off the alternative, hippie image.
After visiting the town, though, you may think that it is more about selling marijuana, than exploring alternative lifestyles. You are unlikely to get hassled much though. If you look like you might be in the market, you will get an offer, and if you refuse, you will politely be left alone.
Farm accommodation, backpackers retreats and bed & breakfast. There is a YHA there, with views towards Mt Warning, believed to be the first point on the Australian mainland to see the sun rise each day.
