Goolwa is a historic river port on the Murray River near the Murray Mouth in South Australia, and joined by a bridge to Hindmarsh Island. The name "Goolwa" means "elbow" in Ngarrindjeri, the local Aboriginal language.
The Southern Encounter Heritage train runs from the Adelaide Hills to Goolwa and on to Victor Harbour two Sundays a month. Premier Stateliner run a connecting coach service to Adelaide and Victor Harbor.
The Goolwa Barrages are constructed across the River Murray to prevent the seawater entering the Murray Lakes system. The barrages run between the mainland and Hindmarsh Island. You can also see the actual mouth of the river in the nearby Coorong National Park, probably easiest viewed from Hindmarsh Island.
